Geo Meter 3.1.0 released

I released Geo Meter and Geo Meter Free version 3.1.0 today.

Here are some highlights of the new features:

1. Path numbering and navigation

You can see the path number on the origin and destination marker as seen in the following example.

You can explore each path one by one, using the path navigation control bar.

2. Sharing data files

You can send a Geo Meter data file to your friends, or send the file to the cloud storage. For this, Geo Meter will use email apps or cloud storage apps such as Gmail or Google Drive. If you send a data file to your friends, they will need to install the Geo Meter app to open the file.

You may send the data file to your own email address for archiving purpose. This lets you keep your Geo Meter data files when you uninstall Geo Meter app from your device. You may install the app in a new device and open the data files created with another device.

3. Supporting tilt view

You may tilt the view by positioning two fingers on the map and pushing upwards. Automatic screen fitting will work with the tilted view. Tapping on the compass, located in the upper left corner, will reset the tilt angle to zero, in addition to setting the orientation toward the north.

Geo Meter 2.0 released

I released version 2 of Geo Meter and Geo Meter Free today.

The most important improvement is support of non-straight path segments. With the introduction of bend-point and bend mode, now you can bend a path segment. That is especially useful when you create hiking plan. The following example shows bend-points usage in a hiking trail map.

bend-points shown
bend-points hidden

You will typically show the bend-points while you edit the path, then hide them when the edit is complete.

I also made a change to Automatic Screen Fitting or Auto-fit. Previous version had three Auto-fit direction options: toward north, toward destination and bounding box. With bounding box option, the Geo Meter App determined the Auto-fit direction by its own algorithm which sometimes may not be the best direction the user was expecting. I decided to give more control to the user, so replaced it with a new toward set-direction option. You set the direction by rotating the map, then auto-fit direction will follow that direction when you choose toward set-direction option.

Another notable change is the reorganization of navigation menu items and toolbar buttons. I removed the preference settings page and moved settings items to the navigation menu and toolbox, so that users can have easier and quicker access to frequently used setting changes.

Other miscellaneous changes include, refreshing UI design, improving performance and fixing some minor bugs.

Geo Meter launching

I am excited to publish my first Android app, Geo Meter, on the Google Play store.

Geo Meter is an interactive distance measuring and route planning application. You can use it to check distances between any two or more locations around the world. You can also use it to create a variety of activity plans that need distance information. For example, you can create a golf course map showing distances of your planned shots for the game or create a hiking plan in line with your target distance goal. You can instantly update the plans during the actual activity.

Geo Meter has two flavors available—free version and paid version. Free version has a banner ad on the bottom of the screen. You can purchase a paid version for $1.99 if you do not want to see the ads.
